Beginning with the 2026–27 school year, cell phones and other personal wireless communication devices will not be permitted during classroom instructional time.
This change follows Michigan House Bill 4141 and Senate Bill 495, which establish a statewide requirement for K–12 public and charter schools to restrict smartphone and wireless communication device use during instructional time. While the state sets the requirement, each school district is responsible for creating and enforcing its own specific policy.
Why the change? The goal is simple: fewer distractions and more learning.
Cell phones can interrupt instruction, pull students' attention away from their work, and make it more difficult for students to stay engaged in the classroom. Limiting phone use during instructional time helps create an environment where students can focus, participate, interact with their classmates and teachers, and get the most out of each school day.
We appreciate the support of our parents and families as we work together to help our students have a successful school year.

Even if your child attended Shelby Public Schools last year, returning student enrollment forms must be completed each school year.
Completing your forms before the first day of school helps ensure your student has a smooth start and prevents delays in receiving their Chromebook.
Why is annual enrollment important?
✅ Student Safety – Update allergies, medications, and other medical information so we can provide the best care.
✅ Emergency Contacts – Keep phone numbers, addresses, and emergency contacts current so you receive important notifications, including weather delays, school closings, attendance alerts, report cards, and other school communications.
✅ Residency Verification – Annual updates help the district meet state requirements and verify student residency.
✅ Planning Ahead – Enrollment information helps us prepare class sizes, staffing, transportation, and resources for the new school year.
💻 Chromebook Reminder
Chromebooks cannot be issued until all required enrollment forms have been completed.
Thank you for completing your student's enrollment before school begins and helping us provide a safe, successful start to the school year!

We are proud of our elementary and middle school teachers and their continued commitment to student success, growth, and learning. 💜🐯

Despite the chilly spring weather, these students dedicated several hours to making a positive difference and helping keep our community beautiful. Their hard work, teamwork, and commitment to service are something to be proud of.
After their efforts were complete, the group gathered together to warm up and enjoy some hot pizza as a well-earned reward.

~Canceled~

Our 6th grade students recently finished reading The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind by William Kamkwamba, an inspiring true story about determination, creativity, and the power of education.
To celebrate completing the book, students enjoyed a class celebration yesterday while watching the movie version of the story! It was a great opportunity for them to compare the book to the film and see how William’s incredible journey came to life on screen.
Throughout this unit, students explored themes of perseverance, problem-solving, and innovation, and learned how one young person’s idea helped bring electricity and hope to his village.
Great job to our 6th graders for their thoughtful discussions and hard work during this unit! 👏📖

Oceana County Parents – Did You Know?
Shelby Adolescent Health Center (SAHC) is located right inside Shelby Middle School, and it’s a great way to help your student stay healthy — and stay in attendance!
If your child isn’t feeling well during the school day, we can pull them from class to see a licensed medical professional, so you don’t always have to leave work or schedule an outside appointment.
Keeping students healthy means keeping them in school.
This is a great way to prevent absences and get your child back to class quickly and safely.
