About Shelby Middle School

Shelby Middle School serves approximately three hundred students in grades six through eight. The school operates on a fairly traditional middle school scheduling model with an added, unique feature. All students receive daily instruction in language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. Each student is also assigned to a reading advisory class. Seventh and eighth-grade students have two periods of “elective” type classes each day. Sixth graders have a single, daily elective period. The sixth-grade academic day is completed with a one-period class allowing for students to receive supplementary instruction in language arts and mathematics as well as various exploratory opportunities.  The unique feature present across all three grades is a rotating schedule. The rotating schedule allows students to take their core academic classes at different times each day.

The average class sizes in grades six, seven and eight are approximately 31, 24 and 25 students respectively. Every faculty member is fully certified and highly qualified to teach the classes to which he or she is assigned. Our eleven language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies teachers, as well as our three special educators, are assigned to the middle school on a full-time basis. Our teachers of band, choir, drama, physical education, and Spanish teach middle school classes each day but also teach classes in other schools in the district. Guidance and counseling services are available daily.

Faculty and staff members at Shelby Middle School are committed to providing the best education possible for the students of our community.  We believe in the position noted by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform that high-performing middle schools are academically excellent, developmentally responsive and socially equitable.  The National Forum has recognized our work in these areas by naming Shelby Middle School a “Schools to Watch” school.

We welcome the opportunity to meet the academic, social and emotional needs of every student at SMS.  We recognize the importance of sustaining emphasis on continuous improvement.

Thank you for your interest in our school.
